Chapter Seven

Audrey stood at the stove, frying up pancakes like her life depended on it. She’d slipped into her own bed in the wee hours of the morning. She wasn’t ashamed of what they’d done but she didn’t want to advertise it either. She’d slept soundly, waking to her alarm only begrudgingly. She wanted to be downstairs first, not sleeping in to all hours like some pampered princess. She knew she was at the Coulter ranch only out of sheer generosity. She wouldn’t treat her visit like she was staying at a free hotel.

So that meant apple pie pancakes, her Mamma’s specialty. She grated apples into the batter and sprinkled in plenty of ground cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. The smell of the butter frying made her stomach grumble furiously.

She blushed, thinking of all the exercise she’d had the night before. The sight of Gage’s lean calves leading up to strong thighs almost made her faint right over the stove. Focus, Audrey! It was like she was a girl of 18 instead of a woman a whole decade older.

Jace came down first, dressed in plaid pajama pants and a T-shirt, his hair all mussed and his nose fairly twitching. Sadie came next, dressed in her pink housecoat and slippers.

“Goodness!” she exclaimed. “That smell could raise the dead. I thought I’d sleep ‘til noon but there was no way I’d miss a good mess of flapjacks. What a sweetheart you are.”

“My pleasure, ma’am,” Audrey said, transferring more cooked pancakes to a tray inside the oven.

Sadie began setting out syrup and jam and Jace set the table. Gage stumbled downstairs, hair still dripping from the shower. He was wearing tight jeans and a heather gray T-shirt and looked a bit worse for the wear. Audrey handed him a big cup of coffee without a word. He smiled, thanking her with his eyes.

Soon the cakes were done and Audrey put them in a big stack in the center of the table with cut-up fruit and whipped cream. And because she was serving cowboys, there was a hearty helping of bacon too. The family attacked the food like starved animals. There’d rarely been a sight that had given Audrey so much pleasure. She sat back, quietly sipping her coffee and listening to the family chatter. Riley of course was M.I.A.; Sadie despaired over the boy but it seemed she had to accept his antics. He was a wildcard and had been ever since he was a boy.

After breakfast, Audrey and Sadie washed up while the men did some chores. She felt a bit nervous spending time with Gage’s mom after what had happened. But Sadie made it easy.

“Now quit your schoolgirl blushing,” Mrs. Coulter said matter-of-factly as she wiped clean a coffee mug. “I’ve been around long enough to know what you and Gage got up to last night. Don’t you worry about it, love. Gage is a grown man with more sense than most of us. I’ve long learned to trust his decisions. If he likes you, I like you.
